This type of crown is sometimes called a “cap” because of the way they fit over the tooth. The purpose of the crown is to restore the tooth’s shape and size, and also its functionality. Once the crown is cemented into place, it completely covers the visible portion of the tooth.

When a crown is used as a restoration there is usually a temporary one before the final one. The temporary is used to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is made in a dental lab. A temporary crown is, of course, not as strong as a permanent crown, and patients need to be aware of that.
